  • Avoid cotton buds or fingers for removal
  • Pharmacists and GPs can offer further help

Overview

Earwax is a natural substance that protects your ears from dirt and germs. Normally, it moves out of the ear canal on its own. However, sometimes earwax can build up and block the ear, leading to various uncomfortable symptoms. This build-up can happen due to narrow ear canals, excess hair, certain skin conditions, or inflammation. Pushing earwax further in with cotton buds or fingers can also worsen the blockage. Initial management often involves softening the wax with ear drops at home. If self-treatment isn't enough, a pharmacist can recommend dissolving drops, or a doctor can perform procedures like irrigation or microsuction to remove the blockage.
