Threadworms Treatment

Last Updated: July 3, 2026

Lifestyle Modifications

To break the cycle of infection and prevent re-infection by eliminating eggs from the environment and personal contact.

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, especially before eating, after using the toilet, and after changing nappies, and encourage children to do the same.
  • Shower every morning to remove any eggs laid around the anus during the night.
  • Keep fingernails short and clean, and discourage nail-biting or thumb-sucking to prevent egg ingestion.
  • Wash sleepwear, sheets, towels, and soft toys at a hot temperature daily for several days after treatment to kill eggs.
  • Disinfect kitchen and bathroom surfaces regularly with hot water and vacuum/dust with a damp cloth to remove eggs.
  • Ensure all household members wear underwear at night and change it daily; avoid shaking clothing or bedding to prevent egg dispersal.
  • Do not share towels or flannels to prevent cross-contamination.

Medicinal Treatment

To eradicate existing threadworm infections and prevent their recurrence.

  • Administer mebendazole, an over-the-counter medication available as a chewable tablet or liquid, which kills the worms.
  • Treat all household members over 2 years old, even if asymptomatic, as threadworms spread easily and others may be infected without symptoms.
  • Consult a pharmacist or GP before treating children under 2 years old, or if pregnant or breastfeeding, as specific medical advice or alternative approaches may be necessary.
  • Understand that medication kills the worms but not the eggs, necessitating continued strict hygiene measures for 2 weeks post-treatment to prevent re-infection.
  • If medication is not suitable, strict hygiene methods must be followed for 6 weeks to effectively break the infection cycle.
